Aloe sanguinalis is a new species named for its bright red color, which comes from its unique blood-red sap. As the leaves grow, they also turn reddish. The discovery of Dacar cas, or Aloe sanguinalis, started when Ahmed Awale, an environmental advocate from Somaliland, found these large clusters of reddish plants while working with the NGO Candlelight, which focuses on environmental issues, education, and health. Mary Barkworth, a botanist interested in Somaliland's plant life, learned about the plant from Ahmed. They decided to investigate whether Dacar cas was a new species and soon believed it was.
The next challenge was to prove that Dacar cas is different from over 600 known Aloe species. This took longer than expected, but they have now succeeded. Dr. Barkworth points out that this discovery comes from a region affected by conflict, instability, climate change, and environmental degradation, which often distracts from improving community livelihoods. She hopes this finding will encourage scientists to explore the area further. Currently, Aloe sanguinalis is only known from two locations, but there is hope that sharing its name and images online will lead to more discoveries and documentation of its habitats.
